8 Steps for Designing Small Kitchens

Designing a small kitchen can be a rewarding challenge. With the right approach, you can create a space that is not only functional but also stylish and welcoming.

So here are 8 tips to help you design a small kitchen that maximises space but also improves usability.

1. Prioritise the Kitchen Layout

The layout of your kitchen is crucial in a small space. The most effective layouts for small kitchens are the one-wall, galley, and L-shaped designs.

  • One-Wall Kitchen: All appliances and cabinets are aligned along a single wall, which keeps everything within easy reach.

  • Galley Kitchen: Features two parallel walls with a walkway in between, providing ample counter space and storage.

  • L-Shaped Kitchen: Utilises two adjacent walls, maximising corner space and providing flexibility in appliance placement.

2. Optimise Storage Solutions

Storage is often a primary concern in small kitchens. Innovative storage solutions can help you keep your kitchen organized and clutter-free.

  • Pull-Out Pantries: Maximise narrow spaces with pull-out pantry units that offer easy access to stored items.

  • Corner Drawers and Cabinets: Use the often-wasted corner space with custom cabinets and drawers designed to fit perfectly.

  • Overhead Storage: Install shelves or cabinets that reach the ceiling to store infrequently used items.

3. Choose the Right Appliances

In a small kitchen, every centimetre counts. Choose compact and multifunctional appliances to save space and enhance efficiency.

  • Slimline Appliances: Look for narrow dishwashers, refrigerators, and ovens designed specifically for small spaces.

  • Combination Appliances: Consider appliances that serve multiple purposes, like a microwave-convection oven combo.

  • Built-In Appliances: Integrate appliances into your cabinetry to create a seamless and uncluttered look.

4. Light It Up

Good lighting can make a small kitchen feel larger and more inviting. Combine different types of lighting to achieve the best effect.

  • Natural Light: Maximise natural light by keeping window treatments minimal. Skylights or light tubes can also be considered if feasible.

  • Task Lighting: Install under-cabinet lights to illuminate your work surfaces.

  • Ambient Lighting: Use recessed lighting or a small chandelier to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

5. Use Light and Reflective Materials

Light colours and reflective materials can make your kitchen feel more spacious.

  • Colour Scheme: Stick to a light colour palette for walls, cabinets, and countertops. Whites, creams, and pastels work well.

  • Reflective Surfaces: Consider glossy finishes for cabinets and backsplashes. Stainless steel appliances and glass tiles can reflect light and enhance the feeling of space.

6. Maximise Counter Space

Counter space is crucial for meal preparation and other kitchen tasks. Here’s how to maximise it in a small kitchen.

  • Multipurpose Islands: If space allows, add a small kitchen island that can serve as a prep area, dining space, and storage unit.

  • Fold-Down Surfaces: Install a fold-down table or countertop extension that can be tucked away when not in use.

  • Clear the Clutter: Keep countertops clear by storing small appliances and utensils in cabinets or on wall-mounted racks.

7. Think Vertically

In small kitchens, vertical space is your friend. Use it to its full potential.

  • Tall Cabinets: Extend your cabinets to the ceiling to increase storage capacity.

  • Open Shelving: Open shelves can provide easy access to everyday items and create an airy feel.

  • Pegboards: Install a pegboard on an empty wall to hang pots, pans, and utensils.

8. Add Personal Touches

Even a small kitchen can reflect your personal style. Add decorative elements that make the space feel like home.

  • Backsplash: Choose a stylish backsplash to add character and protect your walls.

  • Decorative Hardware: Replace standard cabinet knobs and pulls with unique, decorative hardware.

  • Artwork and Plants: Hang a piece of artwork or place a small plant on a windowsill to add a touch of personality.

Summary

Designing a small kitchen requires thoughtful planning and creativity. I always prioritise the storage space, including selecting the right appliances, so that I'm maximising the layout. And by incorporating light and reflective materials, you can create a kitchen that is both functional and beautiful.

Remember, the key is to make the most of the space you have while adding personal touches that make it uniquely yours. Happy designing!
